Who is Daichi Hara?

Daichi Hara is a Japanese freestyle skater who was born in 1997. He competed in the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in freestyle skiing and won the bronze medal. His height is 5’7 but that didn’t stop him from winning a medal for his country. Daichi Hara is a student who studies Sports Science at the Nihon University, Tokyo, Japan, and he can speak English and Japanese fluently. He has trained under the club Team Jocks under Coach Yoshivuki Ono from the club and Coach Ykako tozawa who is a national level coach. Hara made his World Cup debut in 2015 in Calgary, Canada. He began freestyle skiing at the age of three and took up freestyle mogul skiing in 2009. He was encouraged by his parents to get involved in the sport. He had an ambition to win gold at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. He came very close to his ambition by winning a silver medal in men’s moguls at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games and he regards his parents as his biggest influence. Hara moved to Canada at the age of 16 and it’s there that he spent time studying and training at the Canadian Sports Business Academy in Whistler, British Columbia. After he qualified in top spot for the third and last final of the night, the 20-year-old Hara appeared to one and all as if he might take the honor of being Japan’s first gold medalist of the games, but came up short as Canada’s Mikael Kingsbury and Australian Matt Graham grabbed gold medal and silver medal, respectively. Hara made a fearless and brave effort to score 82.19 points as the last skier of the night, claiming a podium as a slew of competitors fell on the Phoenix Snow Park slope. “I am just so happy,” said Hara. “It’s a relief because I had struggled so much until now. Last year, I didn’t have any good performances and this is my first podium finish. My heart is filled with joy.” Hara was earlier lacking in speed and jump scores both but when compared to Kingsbury and Graham, he became the first man from his country to medal in freestyle skiing. He is the first man or woman to win a medal in the discipline since Tae Satoya took the bronze medal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.
