Scott Eastwood, son of the legendary actor and filmmaker Clint Eastwood, had revealed in an interview about how his former girlfriend was one of 11 people killed in connection with one of the biggest airbag failures in America. Eastwood opened up about his love for the gymnastics coach and model girlfriend and he confirmed that a faulty airbag was the cause of Jewel Brangman’s death in 2014.
“The f***ed up thing is, it was a fender bender, and there was a recall on airbags. Her airbag exploded”, He added, “It shot a projectile through her body. It split her spine and, um, I’ve never told anybody that…I still never called her father. I still haven’t found the right words,” he said.

Although Eastwood never mentioned Brangman by name in the interview, a report from the associated press confirmed the 26-year-old aspiring model and gymnastics coach was the person killed in the September 7, 2014 car crash. Brangman had been driving from San Diego to Los Angeles when she rear-ended a van in front of her. The impact caused her airbag to deploy and then explode due to the faulty make.
In the U.S. 14 automakers had to recall 24 million vehicles due to the exploding airbags and many people had been killed, several of them were high profile people, Brangman being one of them. Brangman’s father, Alexander, said in an interview, “My life changed. It was horrific.” He added, “I couldn’t even breathe. I collapsed to the floor. Air bags are supposed to save lives. Not be the cause to take them.” The exploding air bags were made by Takata Corp. of Japan. Last year, it was confirmed by the U.S. Highway Safety Regulators that Brangman’s death in a 2001 Honda Civic was the seventh U.S. death due to faulty airbags, and the eighth fatality worldwide related to Takata airbag inflates which explode, sending shards of metal through the passenger compartments of cars.

The car was rented to Jewel Brangman in August 2014, as said in a statement by the Honda company. Brangman’s death prompted her father to file a wrongful death lawsuit against Honda, Takata Corp. of Japan and also on the rental company of the vehicle she was driving, a 2001 Honda Civic. “I’ve lost friends before; I’ve lost some great friends. But, I had never lost someone I had been really intimate with, you know, like in that way, in a relationship,” said Eastwood in the interview. “I think that really affected me in a way that… I don’t know. Maybe it’s made it harder for me to date.” Scott has remained single since then and remains hopeful of finding love again. “It’s easy to fall in love when you’re young, right? And then you start to realize those feelings of love and stuff, passion, love, lust, sometimes they come very quickly, but they can also leave quickly.”

Nearly two years after the car crash, Eastwood was finally able to gather up the courage to call Brangman’s father. Alexander Brangman, a single father and a law professor admitted that the reunion was not easy for both of them. “Quite frankly, I was hurt by it,” Alexander explains, when reflecting back on Eastwood’s silence at the time. “I was disappointed he didn’t come to her celebration of life,” he adds. “Many people were actually disappointed. Many of her friends flew across the country to pay their respects and condolences. There wasn’t even a flower sent.”
Alexander said that Eastwood was apologetic for his silence during the phone call, offering his condolences for Alexander’s loss. “He said ‘I didn’t reach out because I didn’t know what to say,’ ” Alexander explained. “He was very apologetic.” But in the end, Alexander decided to forgive the star, “When things are low, I choose to rise.”
