Stephen Colbert was born on May 13, 1964, in Washington, DC. Lorna and James William Colbert, Jr. raised Stephen Colbert in Washington, D.C. He was the youngest of eleven siblings, who also included James, Edward, Mary, William, Margo, Thomas, Jay, Elizabeth, Paul, Peter, and Stephen.
Lorna was a stay-at-home mom while James was a doctor and medical school dean at Yale University, and later at Washington University and the Medical University of South Carolina.
When he was ten years old, his father and two brothers were killed in an airplane crash. His mother moved the family to Charleston, where he went to the Episcopal Porter-Gaud School. He enrolled at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia to study philosophy but found the curriculum challenging. He transferred to Northwestern University and majored in theatre, graduating in 1986.

In 1995, he appeared on the television comedy show ‘Exit 57,’ which only lasted 12 episodes. In 1997, he joined Comedy Central’s parody news show The Daily Show, which has a nightly audience of 1.45 to 1.6 million viewers. In 2007, he published I Am America (And So Can You!), a book containing political satire written primarily by him, with only a minor contribution from his writing staff. He ran for the Democratic ticket in South Carolina in 2007 but his application was denied because he was not a serious candidate, so he dropped out of the race.
