Who is Scotty James?
Scott James was born in 1994. He is an Australian snowboarder and the flagbearer for Australia at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. He won a bronze medal in half pipe at the 2018 Pyeongchang games. James is nicknamed Scoota and SJ by his friends and family. He loves to do photography and read books about aviation in his spare time. The athlete can speak English only. His girlfriend is Ivy Miller and he has trained under Coach James Jackson. He has a condition where his knee can randomly dislocate. He had also once fractured a bone in his right wrist in a training run at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. Yet, he went on to compete, finishing 21st. The snowboarder began skiing at the age of one and snowboarding at the age of three in Mount Buller, VIC, Australia. He first rode on a mini snowboard which his father bought from a sports shop in Whistler, BC, Canada. There was an 80 centimeter board put on as display but was never intended for use. His father couldn’t find another board small enough for him and so he purchased that. He began competing at the small age of six. He loves snowboarding and has always wanted to be involved in the sport. “I think snowboarding suits my personality more than any other sport. I like the adrenalin and all the things that come along with it like sponsorship, recognition and competitions.” James regards representing Australia at the Olympic Winter Games as his most memorable achievement. His heroes are US snowboarders Danny Davis and Shaun White, US boxer Floyd Mayweather. He believes in the philosophy, “Pain is temporary.” He was selected as Australia’s flag bearer for the opening ceremony of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. James was named the Australian Snow Sports Male Athlete of the Year at the 2017 Australian Ski and Snowboard Awards. After Australian teammate Nate Johnstone was ruled out of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver because of his injury, James was given 48 hours to get from Australia to the east coast of Canada to make a last-minute attempt to qualify for the 2010 Olympic squad. Needing a top 20 result at a World Cup event in Canada to secure his spot for Vancouver, he pulled off the best result of his career until then and managed to finish 15th, thereby qualifying for Australia’s Olympic team. His coach at the time Ben Bright said the effort was phenomenal. “He needed this one result in 48 hours and we decided to seize the moment. He packed his bags, flew out the next morning and got the result. I don’t know anyone else that could have done it.” At young age of 15, he became the youngest male athlete to represent Australia at the Olympic Winter Games when he competed at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. He also became the youngest male athlete from any nation to have competed at the Olympic Winter Games in 50 years.

James first competed on the international circuit as a 13-year-old at the 2010 Europa Cup in Saas Fee, Switzerland. Throughout the last two World Cup seasons, he has proven himself an up-and-coming star of the half pipe, with consistently improving results. A 23rd place in the 2009–10 FIS Snowboard World Cup in Kreischberg, Austria. He was also the flag bearer for the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games 2018. When teammate Nate Johnstone was ruled out of the Games with an ankle injury, James went to the World Cup in Stoneham, Canada, to try to achieve the top-19 result that would make him eligible to replace Johnstone. He pulled off his best result to date, a 15th, which secured him a place in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. At the age of 15, James was Australia’s youngest male Olympian in 50 years and the youngest male competitor at the Vancouver Games.[5] James’s first snowboard was not actually made for snowboarding—it was a display board in a shop in Vancouver. James and his father had trouble finding a board small enough for him so they bought the display board, for $10.[6] James won the bronze medal in the men’s half pipe competition at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, behind Shaun White of the United States’ gold medal in the event and Ayumu Hirano of Japan’s silver. Scotty James had got himself into some trouble at the recent 2018 Olympic Winter Games. He slammed judges who he claims had ‘shafted’ him at previous competitions. His comments were taken poorly and he was branded ‘a goose’ for slamming judges ahead of the Olympic Games. Radio host, Tom Elliot said, “He added: ‘If you want to win a medal at the Olympics, the last thing you would do is criticise the judges who will decide your fate.’ His main grumble was that he believed his tricks had not been scored correctly while judges cast more favourable scores in his competitors’ direction.
