The Alpine ski racer was born in Milan, Lombardy to mother, Maria Rosa Quario who was a former World Cup racer in the early 1980s and had four World Cup wins and fifteen podiums, all in slalom. Brignone made her World Cup debut in December of 2007 at the young age of 17, but her first full season on the World Cup circuit was in 2010. At her first World Championships in 2011, Brignone got the silver medal in the giant slalom. In December 2012, Brignone had to undergo a surgery on her right ankle to remove a bothersome cyst thereby missing the rest of the 2013 season. Through December 2017, she has six victories and 20 World Cup podiums; and out of 20 podiums, 15 in giant slalom. From her athlete’s profile, we come to know that Brignone is nicknamed as Fede and Duracell by her friends and relatives. She loves to indulge in rock climbing, surfing, tennis, golf, hiking, cooking, reading and dancing in her spare time. She is an athlete by profession and has studied Human Movement Studies from the University of Turin, Italy. Brignone can speak English, French, Italian languages fluently. She trained in the club CS Carabinieri [Italy] under Coach Matteo Guadagnini who is a national level coach. Her mother Maria Rosa Quario represented Italy in alpine skiing at the 1980 and 1984 Olympic Winter Games. Her father Daniele Brignone has coached at the Chamole Skiing Club in Switzerland. In December 2012 she had surgery to remove a cyst on her right ankle. She was unable to ski for three months and did not return to competition until the 2013 World Cup event in Solden, Austria. She first wore plastic skis at age 18 months in the family home in Milan, Italy. At age two she would ski down a small street behind her grandparents’ house in Courmayeur, Italy. Her grandmother Adriana signed her up for ski school in Courmayeur. With skiing in her blood, her passion and interest for the sport was recognized quite early by her family. She has been passionate about alpine skiing from a young age. “I wept with rage when my parents did not wake me up in the morning [to go skiing] during the Christmas holidays because they believed I had to rest, or because the weather was really bad. I did not suffer the cold, wind or storms. Skiing with fresh snow was just crazy fun.” Brignone regards the US alpine skier Ted Ligety, Italian motorcycle rider Valentino Rossi and Swiss tennis player Roger Federer as her heroes. She believes in the philosophy, “Risk more than others think is safe, dream more than others think is practical, expect more than others think is possible.” and also devises her life around this thought.

Brignone earns first career super-G victory

Federica Brignone had participated at the Audi FIS World Cup Super-G race in Grandvalira. It was a battle against nature as the ladies had to fight against heavy snow and winds after waiting through a three-hour delay for their alpine skiing event. In the end, Federica Brignone (ITA) came away with the victory, topping Laurenne Ross (USA) by 0.13 seconds. With her towering height and perfect weight, she overshadowed her teammates at the podium. It was the fifth podium for Brignone this season, but her first career podium in super-G. “It’s incredible today,” Brignone said. “I just can’t believe it, and it’s crazy. I know this was a tough race. It was not the best conditions for the best racers, the top 7, but then I took advantage of my luck and I just skied my best and tried to push. I knew it was just one minute of super G, so I tried to push every single turn.” “Actually, when I went down it was really good,” Brignone continued. “You must not to go outside the race line because the snow was a little bit soft. In the last part, if you were going a little bit wide, you were kind of slowed down. A part from the top section, it was so good for me because it was just steep and technical.” Ross was placed second and was equally happy about it. She said that the victory made an important career mark on her standings and it was just her second-ever World Cup podium. Austrium Tamara Tippler surprised everyone by placing third. This was also her second career podium finish. “My skiing has been improving and I got on the lucky side of things today and I took advantage of it, and I’m really happy,” Ross explained. “I mean, it’s an outdoor sport. It’s very rarely perfectly fair, but yeah, it started snowing pretty hard in the middle of the race and that definitely created some slow surfaces for the girls behind, but I mean that’s ski racing and if you’re on the good side of it, you have to take advantage of it and if you’re on the bad side, then just hope for the best next time.”

Federica Brignone claims maiden World Cup win

Everything was like a dream come true for the Italian Federica Brignone who started off the 2015-16 Audi FIS World Cup season and ended up earning her first-ever World Cup victory topping the giant slalom field on Rettenbach glacier in Soelden (AUT). Brignone led after the first run by nearly a full second and skied nearly a flawless second run to finish just ahead of USA’s Mikeala Shiffrin by 0.85 seconds. Tina Weirather (LIE) rounded out the podium 1.25 off the pace, taking her fourth-ever giant slalom top-three finish. With several of the top names out of the game in the season, the event was the first chance for people to see who will shine amongst all and try to fill in the gap left by retired athletes, injured athletes and those taking a season off. So it almost came as little surprise that the season started with Brignone’s maiden World Cup win. She was the least expected candidate for the podium. It was a pleasant surprise for all. “It is so great,” a jubilant Brignone said. “I’m so happy about this first win. I have been close sometimes in the past but I thought it had never happened because I didn’t deserve to be there. Last season was good but didn’t bring enough satisfaction so I took some time off after in the spring. Then I decided to train as hard as ever and I even have a new physical trainer. This good preparation enabled me to push until the end and that felt so good” Shiffrin who was last year’s Soelden giant slalom winner, had to settle in for a solid second run, but Brignone was ultimately too good for anyone to challenge today. Speed specialist Lara Gut (SUI) also had a good day, taking fourth place and picking up valuable early World Cup points. “It was a gorgeous day, the surface was really rough solid and very fair one,” said Shiffrin. “I felt good with my skiing and I’m happy about that.” “The last couple of days, I was really nervous, kind of freezing in my skiing,” the 20-year-old added. “But this morning I got up and I told myself to go and have fun on the hill, try to charge and not let the hill take control of me. But of course Federica nailed it.” It was a picture perfect start to the season giving the audience a nail-biting thrilling race as the athletes were welcomed to the first race with ideal snow conditions and blue skies. After two straight days of press conferences and other formalities, the athletes were more than ready to show off their skills on the slope.
