Who is Antoinette De Jong?
Antoinette de Jong is a Dutch speed skater born in 1995. She won a bronze medal in the 300 m at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. Jong also competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Soch where she was placed seventh in 3000 m. She is the world record holder of 3000 meters in juniors. The 22-year-old Dutch Speed Skating champion hails from Rottum, a village near Heerenveen, which also happens to be the Speed Skating capital in the Netherlands situated in the northern province of Friesland, and home of the famous Thialf Speed Skating stadium. De Jong said in an interview that she grew up with horses. Her grandfather used to breed Friesian horses and her mother was an equestrian athlete. She got her first pony when she was just 4 years old and De Jong used to compete in all of Equestrian events as a child. She started speed skating as a child. In the interview, she said, “When I was little we had natural ice in Friesland and there was a canal at the back of our house, where I used to go skating. When I first got onto the ice, my parents wanted me to skate behind a chair [the common way too teach Dutch kids how to skate], but I did not want that chair because I knew how to skate instantly. People asked me to join a race at Thialf. That’s how I started Speed Skating.” She always loved speed skating and chose that as her career. As a child, she was equally good in Equestrian and speed skating. She broke the World Junior Record in the 3000m twice, first in Calgary and later in Salt Lake City. She was also qualified for the Sochi Olympic Games later that season although her performance was not that great. Antoinette De Jong won a bronze medal at the 2016 World Championships at Kolomna in 3000 m. She also won a bronze medal at the 2017 World Championships at Gangneung in 3000 m. She won a silver medal in team pursuit at the 2018 Winter Olympics at Pyeongchang. She did not win any other silver medal at Pyeongchang but won a bronze in 3000 m.
