Harris made his professional MMA debut on March 15, 2011, when he competed against Justin Thornton at HEF: Hess Extreme Fighting. He won the first-round TKO with only sixteen seconds remaining in the round. After that, he went 6-1, with victories over Tony Melton and UFC veteran Anthony Hamilton, before signing with UFC in the fall of 2013.

Harris signed a contract with the UFC on September 19, 2013. On November 30, 2013, he faced fellow newcomer Jared Rosholt in the Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale. Following his release from the UFC, he signed with the Florida-based promotion Titan FC. On May 16, 2014, he faced D.J Linderman at Titan FC 28. He won the fight by knockout in the first round. Harris was scheduled to face Dave Herman on September 26, 2014, at Titan FC 30. However, due to a back injury, he withdrew from the fight, and the fight was postponed. It was rescheduled for December 19, 2014, and was expected to take place.

After Daniel Omielanczuk was forced to withdraw from his fight with SOA Palelei due to a thumb injury, Harris resigned from the UFC and faced Palelei on November 7, 2014, at UFC Fight Night 55. He was knocked out in the second round by a TKO. On April 23, 2016, at UFC 197, he faced promotional newcomer Cody East and won via TKO in the first round. Similarly, Harris challenged Shamil Abdurakhimov at UFC Fight Night 96 on October 1, 2016. He was defeated by a split decision. Furthermore, on January 15, 2017, he faced Chase Sherman at UFC Fight Night 103. In the second round, he knocked out the opponent. Harris next fought on June 17, 2017, at UFC Fight 111, against Cyril Asker. He won the fight by TKO in the first round, using a combination of elbows and punches.

Harris took on Andrei Arlovski at UFC 232 on December 29, 2018. He won the fight by a unanimous decision. The California State Athletic Commission temporarily suspended him on January 26, 2019, after he tested positive for LGD4033 and selective androgen receptor modulators. Harris was scheduled to face Aleksei Oleinik at UFC Fight Night 151 on May 4, 2019. However, on April 3, 2019, it was announced that Oleinik would face Alistair Overeem at UFC on ESPN+7 after Alexander Volkov dropped out. Harris won by TKO in the first round. Harris was scheduled to face Alistar Overeem at UFC on ESPN 7 on December 7, 2091. However, due to the ongoing search for his missing stepdaughter, he withdrew on November 1, 2019.
