Smith grew up in Queens, but he was born on 14 October 1967 in the Bronx, NY. He grew up along with one younger brother and four sisters.

Smith’s parents came from the United States Virgin Islands where his dad was a baseball player and also basketball star in the 1950s, and later he managed to run a hardware store. Smith’s younger brother was very supportive to him, but in 1992, he died in a car accident. Smith does have his half-brother on his father’s side.

Stephen went at Thomas Edison High School in Queens where he was raised, and later he joined Fashion Institute of Technology. After a year, he accepted a Basketball scholarship, and with that scholarship, he went at Winston Salem State University, where he played basketball under his coach Clarence Gaines.

Since 1994, Stephen Smith started to work as a reporter in college, and his journalism career was already launched with Winston-Salem journal as a clerk in the sports department. On the same year, he joined with Greensboro News and Record & the New York Daily News.
