The renowned Spanish actor, Javier Bardem is the only Spanish actor to have received the Academy Award in America; this being given in the category of Best Supporting actor; while his wife Penelope Cruz procured the award for Best Supporting Actress. Javier has acted in both Spanish and Hollywood movies and has gained fame not only in these two countries; but worldwide. His recent role of Pablo Escobar in ‘Loving Pablo’ (2017) received mixed reviews. Talking about this passion project and his character, Javier had said:
“I tried to learn where his monstrous behavior came from. I was very interested in diving into Pablo’s inner self. What was going on inside Pablo’s mind that made him capable of so much harm, while at the same time he was very loving and took care of his family and lover.”
Javier’s contribution to society and the world
Javier Bardem is a person who is not shy about speaking his mind out. He is also a great supporter of the environment and this can be seen from the fact that he will be accompanying Greenpeace to Antarctica.
On this trip from Chile, his brother Carlos, producer-director Alvaro Longoria and other scientists and researchers would reach Antarctica to document the area that is to be preserved as Marine Protected Area (MPA). This area is estimated to be located in the Wedell Sea and has an area twice that of Chile. This area is being threatened by the increasing industrial fishing activity. Javier said:
“I want to contribute through this Greenpeace campaign to the knowledge of the importance of the Antarctic Ocean, located at the end of the world and yet, so important for the survival of the planet,”
Javier’s birth and childhood
Javier Bardem was born as Javier Angel Encinas Bardem in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain on 1 March 1969. His acting skills seem to have been inherited from his actress mother, Pilar Bardem. His father Jose was an environmentalist and a businessman who expired in 1995.
This explains his keen interest in the environment and its preservation. His parents were divorced and he has an older brother called Carlos and sister called Monica; both of whom are actors.
His childhood was spent on the film sets and theaters. When he was 6, he was cast in the film Fernando Fernán Gómez’s El Pícaro (The Scoundrel). He also played rugby for the junior national team. Javier Bardem had a passion for painting and learned it at Madrid’s Escuela de Artes y Oficios for 4 years. He took to acting initially to support his painting work but ended up taking acting as the main career.
Javier Bardem, at the age of 20, appeared in a minor role in his mother’s film named The Ages of Lulu, but his acting was so impressive that he was offered a lead role in his second film, Jamon-Jamon (1992). This film was a success globally. In 1993, he starred in the film Golden Balls.
His fame reached a worldwide audience and in 1997 he was offered a role in English, but Javier did not take it since he thought that his English was poor. He, however, soon started taking up Hollywood roles and shone there too. His fame in this part of the world came in 2000 due to his role in Before Night Falls. He was the first Spanish celebrity to be nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards. He had the lead role of a detective in The Dancer Upstairs. He did more significant roles and also won awards for it. His Hollywood debut was with a small role in Collateral. He was seen in 2006’s Goya’s Ghosts. His role in No Country for Old Men, Javier won several awards. His performance in Biutiful was suitably rewarded. He has a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame and has been bestowed with several titles.
Javier’s personal life
Along with a skyrocketing career, Javier Bardem is also happy in his personal life. He started dating his co-star Penelope Cruz in 2007 and the couple tied the knot in July 2010 in The Bahamas. The couple is blessed with two children; a son named Leo (born 23 January 2011) and a daughter called Luna (born 22 July 2013 in Madrid).
