Sidney Poitier is a Bahamian-American actor, author, film director, and diplomat. He was the first black actor to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in ‘Lilies of the Field’.

He was born on February 20, 1927, in Miami, Florida, USA. He is currently 92 years old. Sidney’s father’s name is Reginald James Poitier and his mother’s name is Evelyn (née Outten). They were Bahamian farmers and owned a farm on Cat Island and they traveled to Miami to sell tomatoes and other produce.  His father also worked as a taxi driver. He was born in Miami when his parents were visiting there. He was the youngest of seven surviving children.

Sidney was born two months premature and nobody has expected that he would survive. His parents stayed in Miami and went for a regular checkup. He grew up in the Bahamas and later went to a Brtish Crown colony.

He lived together with his family on Cat Island till the age of 10 and the family shifted to Nassau. He saw automobile, electricity, plumbing, refrigeration, and motion pictures for the very first time. Sidney grew up in a Roman Catholic family and later became an agnostic. Later, he was sent to Miami with his brother’s large family and he did a job as a dishwasher. He was helped by a waiter to read the newspaper. In 1943, he lied about his age and worked in the Army during World War II. He worked there as a mental hospital attendant and feigned insanity. Sidney was dropped and he worked as a dishwasher and auditioned in the American Negro Theater. He joined the Theater but was rejected by the audience. His tone-deafness made his unable to sing. He attempted the second time and he was invited by the Broadway production Lysistrata and given the opportunity to understudy the role of Anna Lucasta.

He was offered to work for Darryl F. Zanuck in the film ‘No Way Out’ in 1950 where he performed the role of a doctor treating a Caucasian bigot led him more roles. He traveled to South Africa with the actor Canada Lee to star in the film version of ‘Cry, the Beloved Country’.

He made his breakthrough appearance as Gregory W. Miller in ‘Blackboard Jungle’ in 1955. He became the first male black actor to be nominated for a competitive Academy Award his performance in ‘The Defiant Ones, in 1958. Also, he became the first black actor to win the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in ‘Lilies of the Field’ in 1963.

In 1959, he acted in the first production of ‘A Raisin in the Sun’ on Broadway and later starred in the film version in 1961. He also made his appearance in ‘The Bedford Incident’ in 1965, ‘A Patch of Blue’ in 1965, ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner’, ‘To Sir, with Love’ and ‘In the Heat of the Night’.

His other film roles include as Lt. Virgil Tibbs in ‘They Call Me Mister Tibbs!’ (1970), and in ‘The Organization (1971)’, as Steve Jackson in ‘Uptown Saturday Night’ in 1974, Warren Stantin in ‘Shoot to Kill’ in 1988, Donald Crease in ‘Sneakers’ in 1992, and as himself in ‘Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project’ in 2008.

He directed the films ‘Buck and the Producer’ in 1972, ‘A Warm December’ in 1973, ‘Let’s Do it Again’ in 1975, ‘A Piece of the Action’ in 1977, ‘Hanky Panky’ in 1982, and many more.

He was awarded an Honorary Oscar in 2002 in the category for his extraordinary performances and unique presence on the screen and for representing the industry with dignity style, and intelligence.

He is a prostate cancer survivor.

As he was born two months prior to the normal date, he became a victim of a number of diseases. His father purchased a tiny casket and her mother took advice from an old man. She said,

“The lady took her hand and started speaking to my mother: ‘Don’t worry about your son. He will survive,’ ”

Poitier recalled,

“And these were her words, she said: ‘He will walk with kings.’”
