While at a news conference shortly after he got awarded the medal, the Russian skater, Semen Elistratov said that Victor Ahn, Vladimir Grigorev, and Ruslan Zakharov were in his mind. Victor Ahn, Vladimir Grigorev, and Ruslan Zakharov are the Russian athletes who were not invited to participate in the Olympics by the International Olympic Committee. He said that he had dedicated that medal to the men who were not able to compete in these Olympics. The IOC banned the Russians from attending South Korea’s Olympic games last year over what the cited as “systematic manipulation” of the anti-doping testing board at Sochi games in 2014. The IOC, however, was kind enough to open doors to Russian athletes who had zero doping history to feature in this year’s Olympics that just concluded. The IOC ax fell on 47 Russian athletes and they appealed the ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but the court rejected their appeals.
