Richard Crispin Armitage is Richard’s full name. He was born on 22 August 1971 in Huncote, Leicestershire,  England. He was the younger son of Margeret, a secretary and John Armitage, an engineer. His older brother is Chris Armitage.

He received his primary education from Huncote Community Primary School in Huncote, Blaby District. After completion, he attended  Brockington College in Enderby. At the college, he pursued his career in music. He received a grant by which he could transfer to Pattison College. He wanted to specialize in Performing Arts so that he could focus on drama and dance.

His ethnicity is Caucasian and nationality is British.

Richard Armitage Career in movies

After completing programme at  Pattison College in 1988, reworked as an assistant choreographer to Kenn Oldfield and performing in various productions. By 1992, he began to doubt if the musical career was the right career path for him. So enrolled at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) in 1993 to further study acting.

“I needed to do something a bit more truthful than musical theatre. For me it was a bit too theatrical and all about standing on stage and showing off. I was looking for something else, so that’s why I went back to drama school.”

After 3 years programme at London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, he returned to the stage as a supporting player with the Royal Shakespeare Company’s productions. His most notable role is as John Thornton in the British television programme North & South and in The Hobbit as dwarf prince and leader Thorin Oakenshield.

“I remember having that moment of finally understanding what was going on. They were having such a good time and the audience was having such a good time and I just thought that was where I wanted to be. I remember thinking they were doing something they loved and they were getting paid for it”. 

He has a trademark voice which he has lent in several movies and series as well.

There were rumors that the actor was gay and was dating The Hobbit costar Lee Pace. Also, there were rumors that he and Annabel Capper were romantically linked in 2013. There was no confirmation on both the relationships.
