He was fourth of 5 children in the family. His sisters were Milka, Angelina, and Marica, and his brother Dane was killed in a horse-riding accident when Tesla was 5.

In high school, he was especially interested in physics and electricity. He graduated in 1873. His cholera affliction left him bedridden for nearly 9 months and his father, in despair, promised him a good engineering college if he comes out of the illness.

He fled in order to escape joining the armed force and it was during this time that he came in contact with valuable books and Mother Nature which made him physically and mentally strong.

In 1875, he joined Austrian Polytechnic, Graz. He was good initially and used to get good marks and also overwork, but ins second year, he took to gambling.  He could not finish his course. At the end of 1878, he left Graz and his family.
