Who is Michelle Gisin?

Michelle Gisin is a Swiss World Cup alpine ski racer who was born in 1993. She participates in all disciplines except giant slalom. She became an Olympic gold medalist after winning the women’s combined event at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, Korea. Michelle is the younger sister of alpine ski racers Marc and Dominique Gisin who have also competed in the Swiss World cup. Gisin has been quite successful in the Swiss Junior National Championships, after finishing third in the downhill event in 2011, third in the Super G event in 2012 and winning the super combined event in 2012. She won a silver medal in the slalom at the FIS Junior World Ski Championships in February 2013. She represented and competed for Switzerland at the 2014 Winter Olympics in the alpine skiing events. Her break through came at the senior level at a World Cup meeting in Val-d’Isere which was just before Christmas 2016. Gisin finished at the seventh place in her first World Cup start in downhill, and achieved her first podium finish when she came second in the combined event. Later that season, at the 2017 Alpine Skiing World Championships in St. Moritz, Gisin won a silver medal in the combined, after having finished behind team-mate Wendy Holdener in a one-two finish for the Swiss team on home snow. In December 2017, at her first visit to Lake Louise, Gisin achieved eighth place in the first of two downhills at the Canadian resort before achieving her second World Cup podium in the second downhill the following day, finishing in third place. The next week, she made a successful return to St. Moritz when she achieved her first top 10 finish in a super-G event, thereby benefiting from a betterment in weather conditions which made it possible for her to again finish second as part of a Swiss one-two, this time finishing 0.1 seconds behind Jasmine Flury. Gisin went on to win the gold medal in the combined at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, finishing in third place in the first run of downhill before holding off Mikaela Shiffrin and Wendy Holdener in the slalom leg to claim the win. She followed in the footsteps of her sister, who also won a gold medal in downhill in the 2014 Games. Gisin has been in a relationship with Italian alpine skier Luca De Aliprandini since 2014.
