Michael Hastings was an American journalist and an author who was killed in a fiery car crash in 2013. He had received several awards for his great work and his car accident was looked at with suspicion since when he died he was investigating a big story. He was preparing new reports on the CIA when he died.
Michael Hastings and the life that was before his fame
Michael was born as Michael Mahon Hastings on 28 January 1980 in Malone, New York. His parents were Dr. Molly Mahon and Dr. Brent Hastings. He has two brothers who are Jeff and Jon. Michael lived in Malone until he was 11. The whole family then migrated to Montreal, Quebec in Canada. His mother was at that time undergoing further training in pediatric ophthalmology at the McGill University.
Michael then attended the Lower Canada College and used to write a column for the school magazine. At the age of 16, his family then shifted to Vermont. Here, he was with the Rice Memorial High School. He was the class President and played lacrosse and soccer for the school. After his graduation in 1998, he began writing for Scholastic for young people. In 2002, he graduated with a BA in journalism from Connecticut College and New York University. He had an American nationality but his ethnicity is not known.

Michael began work as an unpaid intern in 2002 with Newsweek. He used to regularly contribute articles for Gentleman’s Quarterly and was a contributing editor for Rolling Stone.
In 2005, he covered the Iraq war. He lost his fiancé Andrea Parhamovich in 2007 when she was working for National Democratic Institute. Her convoy was ambushed by gunmen and she was killed in this encounter. Michael wrote a book on her titled I lost my Love in Baghdad: A Modern Love story. This book received rave reviews including from New York Times.
His articles on US Army General Stanley McChrystal and later the book The Operators were published and there was a mixed response to it. He also wrote more articles including details of the Afghanistan war and the time there.
Michael Hastings and his death
On 18 June 2013, Michael’s car in LA suffered a single-vehicle collision and a witness to the accident said that the speed of the car was high. It crashed into a palm tree and his body was burnt beyond recognition. The car’s engine was ejected and thrown 50-60 yards away from the accident scene. The LA Police Department said that there was no foul play and it was a case of an accident. Some traces of drugs were seen on him. His brother also said that he felt that he was having a manic episode similar to the one he had 15 years back when he was on drugs. Michael had also told him that FBI might investigate him and that he was onto a big story. But nothing could be proven and FBI also denied that they were going to interview Michael.

Michael was engaged to Andrea Parhamovich but she was killed in Bagdad where she was for her work. He then married Elise Jordan in May 2011 until his death in 2013. Elise also did not suspect any foul play in his death. Elise was a speechwriter for the Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the marriage was held in Holly Springs in Mississippi.
