Mary Carillo is an American sportscaster who reports for NBC Olympics and NBC Sports. She is a former tennis player. Mary Carillo was born on 15 March 1957 in Queens, New York, the USA. She was good at sports but not in studies. She also did not do college.

Currently, she resides in Naples, Florida and shuttles between Florida and New York.

Mary Carillo’s tennis career

Mary Carillo was a talented tennis player and played professional tennis from 1977. The highest rank she gained was the world’s no. 33 position, as per the Women’s Tennis Association Rankings. She had won the 1977 French Open Mixed-doubles title with her childhood friend John McEnroe.

Both then made it to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. She also reached women’s doubles quarterfinalist at the US Open.

She might have been better further on but unluckily she suffered a knee injury which left her unable to pursue professional tennis. Hence she retired from active tennis playing in 1980.

Mary Carillo’s broadcasting career

Mary Carillo then switched to commentary and broadcasting job. She first worked for USA Network from 1980 to 1987. She also worked for PBS from 1981 to 1986. She also reported for MSG from 1981 to 1988.

In 1988, Mary Carillo joined ESPN and worked for them for nine years. She returned to ESPN in 2003. Mary Carillo was with CBS Sports for US Open since 1986 which she continues till date.

Mary Carillo also served as the host and analyst for HBO’s Wimbledon coverage and reporting from 1996 to 1999. She also covered Wimbledon on Turner’s sports for the years 2000 to 2002. In May 2003, Mary joined the NBC Sports for the French Open and Wimbledon as an analyst. She also is part of The Tennis Channel.

Sports Illustrated has called her the sports’ top analyst. Her sense of humor, witty nature and deep voice is liked by her fans. Her commentary is quite insightful but her candid and opinionated style of reporting is not liked by the tennis world’s top players. But she has won several awards in reporting such as Best Commentator by Times Magazine (1988 to 1991) and the like.

She has done Olympic tennis reporting in Atlanta and Sydney. She also reports for skiing events. She also reported on Winter Olympics 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014. She has also reported for HBO and Hallmark Channel. She also was a reporter for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in 2009, 2013, and 2016.

Mary has penned three books on tennis-Tennis my way (1984), Rick Elstein’s Tennis Kinetics: With Martin Navratilova (1985), and Tennis Confidential II: More of Today’s Greatest Players, Matches, and Controversies (2008). She has also acted as herself in film Wimbledon (2004).

Mary Carillo’s personal life, marriage, husband, daughters, and divorce

Mary was married to Australian tennis instructor Bill Bowden for 15 years. They have two children; son Anthony (born 8 August 1987) and daughter Rachel (born 5 October 1991). They divorced in 1998, but the reason for the split is unknown.

Rachel has graduated from Elon University in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration after majoring in management.

Mary never remarried. She also did not date anyone or have any new boyfriend, relationship, or live-in partner. After she was spotted with Julie Foudy, rumors of her being lesbian or gay started floating. Her short hair and husky voice added fuel to these rumors.

But there have been no indicators towards this sexuality in her. Mary is currently a divorcee and spends her time with her children and work.
