Mare Winningham’s full name is Mary Megan Winningham and she was born in Phoenix, Arizona on 16 May 1959. She later moved to Northridge in California and was raised there. Her parents are Sam Neal Winningham and Marilyn Jean. There are three brothers and a sister in the family besides Mare. Her father was the chairman of the PE Department of California State University located in Northridge. Her mother used to teach English at the Monroe High School and was also a college counselor. She had an interest in acting from her age of 5-6.
She completed her basic education at Andasol Ave. Elementary School and she also learned to play guitar and drums here. She used to take part in drama at this school. She then joined the Patrick Henry Junior High School and took drama as an option. During the summer vacations, Mare joined the SCUN’s teenage drama workshop. She was also at the Chatsworth High School and when she was in grade 12, she got an acting role.
Mare Winningham first started to sing and write songs in 1976 and 1977. She had a chance to sing on The Gong Show. She soon bagged an acting contract with Meyer Mishkin and was told to say three lines in James at 15. She starred in the short-lived drama called The Young Pioneers in 1978. She soon got exposure and started getting more acting roles on TV and her career also took off.
