John Oates is best known as one half of the top-selling pop rock duos of all time, Hall & Oates. He is distinguished in the duo by the iconic mustache he used to wear in the 1980’s. He was born on April 7, 1948, in Manhattan, New York. He is the son of an Italian immigrant originally from Salerno named Ann De Palma and an English father named Al Oates. He was raised in a suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, called North Wales. John Oates has been married to his current wife, Aimee Oates, since 1995. They have one son named Tanner Oates, who was born in 1996. The family resides in both Woody Creek, Colorado as well as Nashville, Tennessee. Previously, John Oates was married to a former model named Nancy Hunter. This marriage ended primarily due to his wandering eye. Before Hall & Oates, John Oates attended Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He intended to study journalism, but pursued a career in music instead after meeting his future musical partner, Darryl Hall at Temple University. In 1972, Hall & Oates signed on with Atlantic Records and the rest, as they say, is history.

After signing on with Atlantic Records, the duo Hall & Oates went on to record 21 albums to date, selling over 80 million copies worldwide. They are arguably the most successful duo ever in pop rock history. Of the 21 records they have released, 10 have been number one hits and they have also had over 20 single hits to land on the top 40 charts. Some of their most famous singles include Rich Girl, I Can’t Go For That, Maneater, You Make My Dreams, Sara Smile and Private Eyes. Although John Oates primarily served the role of guitarist for the duo, he co-wrote many of the songs that would make them so successful. He also did lead vocals on some of their songs. Hall & also toured often, performing live shows all over the world. Their involvement in the charity single “We Are the World” and the original Live Aid concert gained them much population and recognition as artists. “We Are the World” was a collaboration with dozens of other famous singers and musicians, including Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson and many, many more.
