Javier Lopez wanted to become an FBI agent like his father and it was not his first choice to play baseball. Lopez went to college at the University of Virginia where he played for the Virginia Cavaliers baseball team. Javier was one of the 29 former UVA players who made it to the major leagues by August 2011. When he was playing for UVA he went 12-9 with a 6.30 ERA and had a batting average of 3.19, 15 home runs and 71 runs batted in (RBI).
Likewise, he played for three seasons for UVA after which he was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fourth round of the 1998 Major League Baseball (MLB) June Amateur Draft. He started his career of the minor league as a pitcher for South Bend Silver Hawks of the A Midwest League.
He played as a left-handed specialist by joining Boston Red Sox in December 2002. In 2002, he played one year with the EI Paso Diablos of the double-A Texas League. Played in 61 games as a reliever, he had only a 204 opponent batting average. Also, he joined Arizona Diamondbacks after leaving the Colorado Rockies in the year 2005 where he couldn’t play well in The Arizona Diamondback so he joined ‘Chicago White Sox’ and competed against Boone Logan for the left-handed specialist. He joined ‘Boston Red Sox’ as he lost the competition with Boone Logan.
Javier took the place of David Riske who was traded in his place and played for Red Fox till 2009. He then replaced John Grabow and signed a one-year contract with Pittsburg Pirates in 2010. Then, he finally joined San Francisco Giants where he played till 8 February 2017. He signed another contract with Giants in 2013 which was worth $13 million. He retired at the age of 40.
