Whitmer first ran for the Michigan House of Representatives in the 1990s but was unsuccessful. She ran again in 2000 and was elected to represent the 23rd parliamentary district. In 2002 and 2004, she was re-elected. Whitmer declared her intention to run for governor of Michigan in 2018 on January 3, 2017.
Whitmer was elected as the Democratic candidate for governor of Michigan on August 7, 2018. In the Democratic primary, she won all 83 counties in the state. In July 2018, Republican leaders accused Whitmer of backing the anti-ICE campaign, which Whitmer denied.
