Career as a Make-up Artist
Over the course of his long career, Daniel Phillips has worked on a combination of over 50 television shows and movies as a make-up artist. He began his career in the 1980’s as a make-up assistant, but he soon rose through the ranks and went from make-up assistant, to make-up artist, to finally, make-up designer. When he first began working as a make-up artist, Phillips worked on television shows like ‘The High Life,’ ‘Cold Lazarus,’ and ‘French and Saunders.’ He worked on these television shows (with a few scattered movies in between) for about twenty years. It wasn’t until about the mid-2000’s that Phillips began to focus on a career as a make-up artist for films, rather than for television. One of the first movies he worked on was ‘The Queen’ in 2006. For much of his career, Phillips was known for working on period pieces. In the first few years of his career (working on films) he worked on films such as ‘The Duchess,’ ‘Jane Eyre,’ and ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.’ While it was not like films he had done in the past, one of Phillips’s most praised films was that of ‘Dracula Untold,’ which was released in 2014.
Right now, his most popular and talked about films include ‘Florence Foster Jenkins,’ ‘Victoria & Abdul,’ and ‘Tulip Fever.’ All of these films were made in 2016 or later. As of 2018, Phillips is currently working on a film called ‘A Very English Scandal’ which is likely to be released in the next year or so.
Awards and Nominations
Over the course of Phillip’s career as a make-up artist, he has won four awards. He has won two Primetime Emmys for his work on the projects ‘Bleak House’ and ‘Arabian Nights.’ He also has a BAFTA award for his work on ‘Florence Foster Jenkins’ and a Royal Television Society, UK award for ‘Bleak House.’ Phillips is currently nominated for an award at the Oscar 2018 even for his work on the film ‘Victoria & Abdul.’ This is his first Oscar nomination. The winner of this award will be announced on March 4, 2018, at the Oscar 2018 ceremony.
