Understanding a murderer’s mind could be difficult. Jodi Arias was one such murderer whose case continued to fascinate people as more and more layers of it were unveiled. Jodi Arias had murdered her ex-boyfriend in a brutal manner and had provided different versions to the police on it. The trial was broadcast live to the public and was a media stir.
The sensational murder
On 9 June 2008, the body of 30-year-old Mormon named Travis Alexander was discovered in a pool of blood in the shower of his home in Mesa, Arizona by his friends. He was a motivational speaker and insurance salesman and had gone missing for 5 days.
His friends were worried about his whereabouts and entered his home to find out.
They were surprised and shocked to find his dead body and notified the police who then came to the crime scene. They found that he had a gunshot wound to his head and more than a dozen stab wounds on his body. He also had a wide and deep slit in his throat. The body was decomposed.
Forensic tests done revealed that the murder had been committed 5 days back on 4 June 2008.
The police started its investigations and soon the main suspect was his ex-girlfriend, Jodi Arias. There was some incriminating evidence found against her and she was charged with first-degree murder and arrested from California soon after.
Jodi first denied any involvement in the case. The police persisted and later she said that she and her ex-boyfriend had been attacked by two masked intruders. She said that they killed Travis but left her and that she feared that they might retaliate and hence kept quiet about the crime.
However, police had found her DNA mixed with Travis’ blood at the crime scene.
In January 2013, the trial on her case began and she took to the witness box. She gave different accounts of the murder. She said that she killed him in a fit of rage since her ex-boyfriend abused her. She said that it was for her self-defense.
She claimed memory loss and said that she was deeply traumatized by the incident. Her psychologist also testified that she had post-traumatic stress disorder. She said:
“Lying isn’t typically something I just do. The lies I’ve told in this case can be tied directly back to either protecting Travis’s reputation or my involvement in his death … because I was very ashamed.”
On 8 May 2013, Jodi was found guilty of first-degree murder and there was a deadlock as regards the penalty. Penalty retrial commenced in October 2014 and this time around the main focus was on the psychological makeup of both parties. The second jury completed the retrial in May 2015 but they were again unable to opine on the death penalty.
Hence it was decided that Jodi would be life-sentenced with no possibility of parole even after 25 years. She was sent to the Arizona State Prison Complex-Perryville to serve her term.
An appeal against her sentencing has been filed by Jodi and due to some errors, it was completed only in 2017. In summer 2018, the deadline for the prosecution and defense has been set to file their legal briefs.
A three-part account of this case is being aired by Investigation Discovery.
What had Travis told his friends?
Travis after his split from Jodi had told his friends:
“Don’t be surprised if one of these Sundays, I don’t show up and you find me dead someplace.”
He seems to have predicted his fate. Alexander’s close friend Sky Hughes also told the media:
“[Arias] was totally obsessed with him. She wouldn’t let him go. Whenever he would try to sever all ties, she would threaten to kill herself … He would tell her he didn’t want anything to do with her, and she would show up at his house. We knew it was her. We didn’t want it to be her, but [we] just knew it was.”
