The Achiever

Ben Folds’ career has been extensive and full of great amazing creative works. The earliest age when Ben Folds got interested in music was when he was 9 years old. He was keenly interested in playing the piano. His father was a carpenter. The great and loving father brought home for his son a piano by means of barter with a customer who was unable to pay. In the 1980s, Ben Folds formed a band ‘Majosha’ with his friend Millard Powers. This band gained local popularity and produced some records. It won the competition ‘Battle of Bands’ at the Duke’s University. They worked on new music and also played at local bars and parties. After the group was disbanded, Ben Folds played drums for a band ‘Pots and Pans’ for a month.

In 1990, Ben Folds moved to Nashville after Scott Siman offered him a music publishing deal. Ben liked the life at Nashville. Talking about his life there, Ben had said:

“In Nashville, I was running eight miles a day, hanging out with my friends, walking around eating chocolate-chip cookies and playing a lot of drums, which I enjoyed. Life was easy. I was never frustrated – even though I wasn’t fulfilling my contract obligations. If you are failing in Nashville, at least your standard of living is nice. Nashville is a nice way to fail.”

Ben Folds researched a lot on the piano technique. He said:

“I spent maybe six months just running scales with a metronome like a freak.I suppose that did something.”

Ben Folds now moved to Montclair, New Jersey and did some acting along with his music career. He then moved back to North Carolina and formed his Ben Folds Five band in 1994. With this band as well as solo afterward, Ben Folds created a number of genre-bending original music. Some of his scores also made it to the Billboard top list of music. He also performed at symphonies and did tours where he gave rock performances along with a piano. In 2001, he went solo and released several albums which were critically appreciated.

He is the first-ever Artistic Advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center. Ben is also an avid photographer. He holds various prestigious positions.
