Amy was born on 13 April 1957 and her current age is 61. Her place of birth is Bay Shore in New York in the US. Both of her parents were active in the social action groups. Her father George Goodman was an ophthalmologist and was also a founding member of the noble group called Long Island Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility. Her mother was Dorothy Goodman and she was a teacher of literature who later took to social work and had co-founded a local chapter of the SANE/Freeze peace group.
Her siblings include David Goodman who is also an investigative journalist and authored books with his sister. Amy belongs to a Jewish family and was raised in New York.
She was a student of the Bay Shore Senior High School and later attended the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine for a year. She completed her graduation from Radcliffe College, Harvard University in the year 1984 and obtained a degree in anthropology.

After her graduation, Amy worked at the New York outlet of Pacific Radio as a producer and news director. In 1996, she co-founded Democracy Now! and hosted this one-hour broadcast and also served as the executive producer for this show. It soon became popular and the fastest growing independent show in the US.

Amy is an excellent investigative journalist. She did a thorough digging into and reporting of the East Timor Independence movement. She and one of her colleagues were subjected to a beating by the Indonesian soldiers when they were covering the Santa Cruz Massacre during this Independence Movement. She received the 2008 Right Livelihood Award.

She is also a recipient of the Gandhi Peace Award in 2012 for her efforts for enduring international peace. She had landed into problems while covering the North Dakota access pipeline protests. She was charged and an arrest warrant was issued in her name.
